This tattoo came from an idea to create an image to bring together science and nature. The outline is the Mandelbrot Set, discovered by Benoit Mandelbrot in the late 70s, and often considered to be one of the first fractal images ever produced. Inside the Set is the Tree of Life as interpreted by the tattoo artist, David Hale of LoveHawk Studios in Athens, Ga. David really brought this idea to life and created an amazing image that captures what I envisioned more clearly than I thought possible. Hope you all enjoy it too!

I chose to get this tattoo as a mark that I’m still alive and that we should remember the worst along with the best.

Noun:Difficulties; misfortune.

before I was even 2 years of age I had already undergone 3 surgeries to try and keep me from death. few months earlier i was being babysat along with my sister. I wouldn’t stop crying so my babysitting thought that shaking me would make me stop.

It did. I became unresponsive due to large amounts of fluids rushing to my head. Shaken baby syndrome.. The doctors said that I would die and that they shouldn’t operate on my anymore because they thought they had me planned out. One doctor disagreed and continued the operation as planned. He Saved My Life. It was the 4th and final operation that saved me. i had shunts running from my head down to my stomach to drain the fluids and still to this day have small quarter sized craters in my skull. nothing visible. Just a reminder.

This tattoo is a reminder that we aren’t meant to live through the good times, but the bad ones as well. To perceive the unexpected. To live.

i remember someone telling me about a babysitter shaking a baby in the news when i was six or so.  sounds too young, but i have a vivid memory of being in my backyard and my sister or mom telling me.  wonder how often it happens.  i’m glad this guy’s okay.
